Step-by-Step Instructions
If you do not have Norton Internet Security or Norton Anti-Virus 2013 yet:
A little known secret of the Norton Internet Security and Norton Anti-Virus suites is that you can get the latest version of the program for free, as long as you continue to have an active subscription.
For example, if you buy a copy of Windows 7, then you own it. When Windows 8 comes along, and if you want it, then you will need to buy a copy of the new version. You don't have the right to automatically upgrade.
Using Norton on the other hand, is like renting a service. They will look at how long you have left in your subscription, and if during that period a new version of their software is released, you will automatically have the right to use the newest version.
Because of the subscription model, Norton doesn't look at which version of the software you buy - as far as they're concerned, Norton Internet Security 2012 and 2013 are the same, and what you pay for is used to extend the number of days in your subscription. In a way, it's like using a pre-paid card to add-value to your mobile phone.
For example, if you have a copy of Norton Internet Security 2012, still have 80 days left in your subscription and the 2013 version is released, you have the right to either stay with the 2012 version, or upgrade to Norton Internet Security 2013 for the remaining 80 days of your subscription.
Save Money: Buy last year's version
A way to save money is to buy the previous year's version of Norton Internet Security or Norton Anti-Virus, since they are always priced lower than the current year's version and stores often have left-over stock.
For example, if it is now November 2012 and the 2013 version is out, then you would buy the 2012 version of Norton Internet Security. Since Norton Internet Security 2012 is now obsolete, retailers will sell it for much less than the 2013 version.
