Many companies try hard to bring their teams together. A major international bank shows that its really not that difficult.

I'm currently working in a major international bank, and all their people I've interacted with are all professional, yet very friendly and you can tell their teams are a tightly-knit bunch. At 4:00 pm every Friday, they have a team building session of fun and games without fail.
One week they formed groups of five to try to stand on a piece of paper for at least 10 seconds, after which the paper would be folded in half and the game would be repeated. Another week they stacked plastic cups up in a pyramid and competed to see who could unstack them the quickest.
What's interesting is that everyone participates in one way or another. If they're not playing the game then they're there to cheer others on or join in the laughter. Afterwards, there are small prizes for the winners and some candy for everyone else.
The games aren't scripted and people genuinely enjoy them. All it takes them to build a great team is some leeway to have fun at the office.
