Asian parents are quick to remind you why you can study 1 of 4 subjects at university. There's a very good reason why.
Growing up in an Asian household with Asian parents, they are quick to remind you that when it comes to university and choice of career, they just want you to be happy.
"You can study anything that you want at university," they will say, "as long as its doctor, lawyer, engineer or business".
Woe behold any child wishing to take a subject outside the Chosen Four.
While such decisions may have led to spirited arguments between parents and children (no talking back!), the Stereotypical Asian Parent may have a point.
Data from PayScale, a compensation consultancy, shows a clear cut picture: those studying the Asian Approved subjects earn significantly more fresh out of university than those studying arts and other topics.
The differences continue further on in people's careers, as wage jumps in the engineering and business subjects leapfrog and outperform degrees which are seen to be less "useful". While studying Latin or Photography may feed you intellectually, it doesn't always put food on the plate.
It looks like it's true: if you're looking to earn a lot and live comfortable lives, taking one of the four, Asian Approved Subjects is the right way to go.
After all, Mum is always right.
