How to renew your Thai ID card before it’s expiry date
If your Thai ID card is expiring this year, you’re living abroad, but are in Thailand for a trip, you can renew your card in advance.
Technically, you can renew the ID card 60 days before and after the expiration date with no penalty. If your trip doesn’t coincide with those windows, then you can still get it renewed.
First, find your nearest ID card renewal office. In Bangkok, these are district offices, or their branches. For example, the Gateway Ekkamai mall has a small branch which is open till late in the evening, and is easier to access than your typical district office.
Bring your Thai passport and your current ID card, and all you need to do is explain to them your situation. They’ll ask you to fill in some basic information, take a photo, and scan your fingerprints. If you can speak Thai but can't read it, you should be alright, as at least they can help in filling out the forms. However, if you can't speak nor read Thai, then do bring someone who can - they are unlikely to speak English.
The cost of renewal outside of the window is 100 baht, and make sure to bring cash as QR code payments aren’t accepted. Without crowds, expect to be there for 15 minutes. They will quickly process your application and print your ID card for you right there and then.
