The Compose is a wireless ergonomic split keyboard with an Apple-inspired design.
If Apple ever made a split keyboard, it would probably look something like this. The Compose is a planned wireless ergonomic split keyboard built around a low profile, aluminium unibody, and a minimal, clean layout. With scissor switches as a base, it uses a standard, row-staggered layout, so for anyone who has used anything from a typewriter to a laptop keyboard, there is nothing to unlearn.
The design shows a clear Apple influence. The two halves connect wirelessly, has built in tenting which also acts as a built-in case, and magnetic palm pads which users can swap out as they wear out.
I like the design aesthetic and idea. As designed, it can help to improve ergonomics without looking or feeling like a piece of industrial hardware, which matters to the office professional who cares about image. This target market is the worker who hot desks, and needs an ergonomic keyboard which has the same experience as their laptop. They also care about looks, and have no knowledge of what a scissor switch nor mechanical switch is. Nor should they. They’d want something which just works.
It is also a segment which is underserved: a low-profile split keyboard which is portable, yet sturdy, with a desktop-like typing experience isn’t exactly common. I’ve reviewed the JOMAA Foldable Ergonomic Keyboard, and while it is small and travel-friendly, it is not designed to replicate the desktop experience for long-form typing.
Priced at US$265, it is coming head-to-head with other existing players such as Keychron’s compact K11 Max, a ~US$90 split Alice layout keyboard with mechanical switches. Even the older Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard, and virtually all of its homages and alternatives, are cheaper.
I hope it succeeds as the Compose looks like a decent keyboard as designed. If it does, economies of scale should bring the price down. I may bring the Compose wireless split keyboard for a hands-on after release in 2027.
